BIG FAT SPOILER ALERT for people who haven’t played a 2/3-year-old game
Anyway, speaking of Phoenix Wright, I’ve just replayed all the Ace Attorney games (except Investigations, because it wasn’t as fun as the court room games - also, too damn easy) and, just as the last time I did a play through, AJ didn’t do much for me. They had some interesting concepts, but the characters in the game really didn’t stick with me much. The only arc that I found myself liking was the death of Pal Meraktis (so it’s Guy Eldoon and the Kitaki Mob Family). And Trucy, bless her, is adorable. But I cannot get Klavier Gavin. To be allowed a Malaysianism, PLEASE LAH. Klavier is a tanned blond rockstar prosecutor. Really, Capcom? There isn’t much depth to his personality, and the “I DESIRE TRUTH SO I AM WITH THE DEFENCE” bit feels overreaching, like the creators want so bad for the player to feel one with Klavier… without there being any particularly good basis for it. I’m sorry, but he feels like a vapid bimbo to me (though I will admit I LOVED his whiny diva act). With Miles Edgeworth, you know he’s got demons he’s struggling with. He disappears for an entire year just to reconcile his ethics. The basis is so damned SOLID. And then when he takes over as Defence Attorney for the day, it just sealed a lot of things that people liked when they saw Miles Edgeworth - his determination to prove the truth, the ruthless way he’s always done. His ‘co-operation’ with the defence was something that was learnt over time. Keyword: OVER TIME. I mean, he was a goddamn ASSHOLE but even I came around (thank 1-4 for that, poor Miles). So, no, I just can’t do Klavier Gavin. Kristoph, however, is A++. His character was very well handled. I’m kind of… so-so with Apollo. Ema was great, her Snackooing is the best I swear. I just wanted to get that off my chest.
Anyway, the characters were kind of dead for me. And the lack of interaction with Phoenix Wright. Let’s be honest, the main reason any of us played or replayed AJ was to see Phoenix Wright and bawl over the hobo he’s become. The end of the game - the introduction/test of the Jurist System feels more like a conclusion than a beginning, considering its position in a game that’s spanned 3 sequels. I’m pretty sure gameplay will be more or less similar (you shouldn’t be able to make the jurist’s decision, like you do in AJ after all - what’s the POINT) but… I don’t know. I’m not really buying Apollo’s generation very much. The game’s enjoyable, sure, but I’m not loving it as much as I did its predecessors.
AND WHAT WILL BECOME OF PHOENIX WRIGHT? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s hoping beyond all hope that he will retake the Bar Exam and head the Wright & Co. Law Offices once again.
I don’t know what, in particular, to expect for future games. I’m pretty sure they’ll be good, but I’m not confident about a wow factor. The only that has improved throughout the franchise is the art. I do hope they do something with Apollo to make us love him like crazy, just as we did Phoenix, because he seriously has that very potential.
On his newfound hobby, trading:
“I trade in my boxers now. I’m up early for the markets. I’m real-time all day long.” He loves the game and the thrill and the nerves of the market; and the market, it seems, loves him right back. I think I just had a vision of live action Apollo Justice. Dear GOD.
